My Platform
1
Encourage active lifestyles
White Rock’s ideal location and climate make it a popular retirement destination. Demographics are changing, though, with young families discovering our City by the Sea. Residents should be able to age in place while enjoying our idyllic setting. Getting in motion when young and staying active as seniors help to build community with happier, healthier lives.
-
Improve existing Centennial Park athletic facilities
-
Cost-share with Surrey for maintenance and use of each other’s athletic facilities
2
Reduce the cost of governing
White Rock is a small city whose residents need the same services as a larger municipality. But a smaller tax base means taxes tend to be higher. Are we getting the best possible value for our tax dollars?
-
City-wide audit to eliminate waste and inefficiency, creating better value for residents
-
Annual cap on the cost and number of consultants hired
-
Determine which capital projects can be completed during our five-year budget cycle and adjust reserves accordingly
3
Set businesses up for success
Parts of Johnston Road and Marine Drive are fading. Some businesses are struggling and tired storefronts don’t bring vitality to our streets. While redevelopment of Johnston and Marine are years away, there are things that can be done immediately to help.
-
Increase the size and number of trash bins along the Promenade
-
Implement traffic control for major events
-
Enhance public safety with more visible foot and bike patrols by Bylaws and RCMP
-
Introduce façade improvement grants, already used by Surrey and other BC municipalities
-
Reintroduce my 2019 resolution at the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) to impose a vacancy tax on commercial as well as residential properties
-
Engage with business advocacy groups such as the Surrey & White Rock Board of Trade to advocate for commercial tax relief and rent control
-
Urge the provincial and federal governments to provide funding for programs to assist the unhoused in our community.
4
Creatively meet our housing target
Build small, not tall. We don't have to compete with Surrey's Semiahmoo Town Centre high-rise project. We can be different. Ensure future development does not overwhelm our infrastructure and fit the character and form of our existing neighbourhoods.
For example:
-
Fast track small units such as secondary suites that can be completed in a year or less.
-
Join the mobile business licensing program so trades no longer have to apply for the same license from multiple jurisdictions, saving them time and money
